WHAT DO YOU DO?

I started my own business to provide support to social housing tenants who are looking to swap their homes. I have designed and built a website (http://www.dreamhomeexchange.co.uk/) to enable people to do this and I have nurtured a large community on Facebook – all people trying to help each other. We believe that good communication and teamwork are the key to making mutual exchanges as easy as possible. Mutual Exchanges are a way for tenants in social housing to move homes - they help people move for jobs, or family reasons, as well as when their family gets bigger or children leave home.

How did you get into that?

My own personal experience meant that I saw a solution to fix a problem faced my many people. I was stuck in Eastbourne desperate to move closer to my family in London. My only option was a mutual exchange because I did not want to lose my tenancy. The online systems available to social housing tenants at the time did not provide a satisfactory way of communicating with each other. I started a group on Facebook which exploded in popularity with thousands of messages each day, and some really large conversation threads! I quickly realised that this was going to become difficult to manage the conversations and people's housing requirements. So, I designed a web-based solution! I've kept the price really low so the system can support as many people as possible. It's growing all the time.

How long have you been doing it?

Two and a half years.

Do you have a mentor or anyone who supports you?

Yes, Kenneth Phillips. He saw the passion I had about creating Dreamhome Exchange. He helped me move and set up the company.

WHO INSPIRES YOU?

People who start from the bottom and work their way up.

Because they help me believe that we can do whatever we want if we work hard. I look at people who have already done it for inspiration!

What do you wish you'd known 10 years ago? What difference would knowing that have made?

I have no regrets I wouldn't change anything.Everything I have been through - good or bad - has made me who I am today.

What are the best things about being a woman in an industry dominated by men?

I take a more positive approach. We have to be confident enough to not let anything get in our way.

What advice do you have for girls or women considering a tech role?

You can do it, believe in yourself.
